OTA 2015: Comparative efficacy between InterTAN nail & sliding hip screw for hip fracture .
A Multicenter RCT Comparing the InterTAN Device Versus the Sliding Hip Screw in the Treatment of Geriatric Hip Fractures: Results Depend on Preinjury Functional Level
249 elderly patients with intertrochanteric hip fractures were randomized to receive an InterTAN intermedullary device or conventional sliding hip screws, to determine if the use of an InterTAN device resulted in comparatively improved function.The primary outcomes were the Functional Independence Measure and the Timed Up and Go Test. Both methods displayed comparable efficacy in terms of functional and mobility outcomes. The InterTAN intramedullary device showed advantageous results compared to sliding hip screws when analyzing the sub-group of patients who had high functional capacity prior to their intertrochanteric hip fracture.
