2014 OTA Annual Meeting: ORIF Versus Arthroplasty of Geriatric Acetabular Fractures: Results of a Randomized Controlled Feasibility Study

A randomized study at a single trauma center was conducted to determine if it would be feasible to perform a full-scale randomized controlled trial comparing open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with total hip arthroplasty (THA) and concomitant ORIF in patients over 60 with an acetabular fracture. Patients presenting to the trauma center were screened over a 2.5 year time frame. Of 65 patients presenting within that time, only 27 met inclusion/exclusion criteria, and only 9 of the 27 agreed to participate. Recruitment rate was an unfeasible 14% (9/65).
