OTA 2014: Early results of a blood plasma bone putty encouraging in open tibial fractures .
First Clinical Use of a Novel Plasma-Based Biomaterial to Augment the Healing of Open Tibial Fractures
30 patients with an open tibia fracture (Gustilo type II, IIIA, IIIB) were included and randomized. Ten patients were randomized to nonaugmented fixation, and 20 were allocated to receive the application of a novel plasma-based bone putty to the fracture site during reduction and fixation. The purpose of this study was to compare bone and soft tissue healing between groups over the first year after surgery. The augmented group was reported to display accelerated union at 3 and 6 months after surgery, and accelerated soft tissue healing over the first month after surgery, although results from significance testing was not reported for these comparisons.
