2014 OTA Annual Meeting: Does Ankle Aspiration for Acute Ankle Fractures Result in Pain Relief? A Prospective Randomized Double-Blinded Placebo-Controlled Trial

OE Journal. 2014;2(21):14109 patients with an ankle fracture (OTA type 44) and presenting within 24 hours of injury were randomized to undergo either ankle aspiration or sham treatment (control) where no fluid was removed. This study aimed to examine whether or not aspiration of hemarthrosis would reduce pain and use of narcotic pain medication in patients with acute ankle fractures. Results revealed no significant differences between groups in Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) pain scores and narcotic usage over the first 72 hours, as well as functional outcome over 6 months.
