OTA 2013: Dynamic fixation superior to static fixation for acute ankle syndesmosis rupture .
A Prospective Randomized Multicentric Trial Comparing a Static Implant to a Dynamic Implant in the Surgical Treatment of Acute Ankle Syndesmosis Rupture
70 patients with acute ankle syndesmosis rupture were randomized to compare the efficacy of dynamic stabilization (TightRope) against static stabilization (3.5mm quadricortical screw) over 12 months. Patients were assessed for functional outcomes using the Olerud-Molander, AOFAS ankle-hindfoot score, time to activities, range of motion, and radiological evaluation. The two methods were also compared for reoperations and complications. The evidence presented in this study demonstrates that dynamic stabilization for acute ankle syndesmosis rupture presents with better short- and intermediate-term functional outcomes, along with lower rates of reoperations.
