Orthopaedic Management Improves the Rate of Early Osteoporosis Treatment After Hip Fracture- A Randomized Clinical Trial
J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2008 Nov;90(11):2346-53.62 patients with low energy hip fractures, managed by surgical fixation, were provided fifteen minutes of education on hip fractures, fracture prevention and osteoporosis and subsequently randomized to orthopedist led management of osteoporosis or a primary care delivered 'usual' care. A significantly greater number of patients were found to be evaluated and remaining on pharmacologic treatment for osteoporosis at 6 months after the hip fracture when the evaluation was initiated by the orthopaedic surgeon subsequently managed in a specialized orthopaedic osteoporosis clinic compared to management by a primary care physician.
