ORIF vs. PRFK for complications, function, quality in patients with calcaneal fractures .
Percutaneous Reduction and Fixation with Kirschner Wires versus Open Reduction Internal Fixation for the Management of Calcaneal Fractures: A Meta-Analysis
Sci Rep. 2016 Jul 26;6:30480.18 randomized controlled trials (n=1407 patients, 1442 fractures) were included in this meta-analysis for the purpose of comparing percutaneous reduction and fixation with Kirschner Wires (PRFK) and open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in the treatment of closed calcaneal fractures. Outcomes of interest included complications related to the surgical wound, postoperative function, and the quality of reduction. Results demonstrated that PRFK demonstrated a significantly lower incidence of wound-related complications, while ORIF was associated with significantly higher functional scores and favourable radiographic results, including Gissane's angle, calcaneal height, and calcaneal width. Upon subgroup analysis of only Sanders type II fractures, only the result on Gissane's angle remained significantly different between groups, while all other differences were non-significant.
