Study Summary

Sixty patients with grade 3–4 knee osteoarthritis (KOA) were randomized to receive either oral cetylated fatty acids (1.5 g/day) or placebo. The primary outcome of interest was change in pain intensity measured using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Secondary outcomes included changes in range of motion (ROM) (flexion, extension, internal rotation, external rotation), the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) total score, and safety outcomes. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, 30 days, and 60 days. Overall, the results of the study revealed greater reductions in pain intensity and significant improvements in knee flexion and external rotation in the cetylated fatty acid group compared with placebo. These findings suggest oral cetylated fatty acids may provide clinically meaningful improvements in symptoms and joint mobility in patients with KOA with a favourable safety profile.
