Oral Omega-3 Reduces DVT & Pulmonary Embolism Following Hip Fracture Surgery in Elderly Patients .
Omega-3 fatty acids reduce post-operative risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism after surgery for elderly patients with proximal femoral fractures: a randomized placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial.
Int Orthop. 2020 Oct;44(10):2089-2093Four hundred and fifty-two elderly patients scheduled for proximal femur fracture surgery were randomized to receive daily omega-3 fatty acid capsules or a placebo for 30 days after surgery. The primary outcome of interest included the incidence of pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Secondary outcomes of interest were the incidence of hematoma evacuation, wound bleeding, wound infection with frank pus, and other bleeding events requiring transfusion. All outcomes were measured 30-days post-surgery. The results demonstrated that the incidence of pulmonary embolism (p=0.03) as well as DVT (p=0.04) were both statistically significantly lower in the omega-3 fatty acid group. All secondary outcomes were not statistically significantly different between the two groups at 30-day post-surgery.
