Dr. Myint discusses the use of oral supplementation for elderly hip fracture patients
126 elderly, post-surgical, proximal femoral fracture patients were recruited to two groups: one receiving hospital diet alone and the other receiving additional oral liquid nutritional supplementation (18-24g protein and 500kcal per day) to assess if the addition of an oral nutritional supplement improved clinical outcomes. Results at discharge from rehabilitation and at 4 week follow-up demonstrated that nutritional supplements had both clinical and nutritional benefits, but did not improve functional outcomes.
