58 patients undergoing a hip arthroplasty procedure were randomized to receive a pre-operative oral carbohydrate solution (OCS; n=28) or standard pre-operative care involving fasting from midnight on the day before surgery (n=30). The outcomes of interest included pre-operative anxiety and post-operative patient comfort, measured pre-operatively and in the first 12 hours post-operation. The results of the trial demonstrated a significant benefit of OCS over control with respect to pre and post-operative anxiety levels, as well as post-operative pain, nausea/vomiting, hunger/thirst, and overall comfort with hip replacement. Blood glucose levels were also significantly higher in the OCS group throughout the pre and post-operative period. The results of this study suggest that OCS can effectively reduce anxiety and discomfort before and after hip arthroplasty surgery.
