Open vs Minimally Invasive Scarf Osteotomy for Hallux Valgus Correction: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Fifty eight patients with hallux valgus deformities were randomized to receive a minimally invasive scarf (MIS) osteotomy (n=30) or standard open scarf osteotomy (n=28). Outcomes of interest were radiologic measurements, postoperative clinical and pain scores, operative time, radiation exposure and complications. The MIS group obtained similar radiographic and clinical outcomes as the open scarf osteotomy group. The MIS group had a significantly reduced operative time (p=0.0001) but significantly increased radiation exposure (p=0.0001). The MIS group also had a significant reduction in pain scores at 24h postoperatively. No major complications occurred in either group.
