Open versus arthroscopic release for lateral patellar compression syndrome: a randomized-controlled trial

Eighty patients diagnosed with lateral patellar compression syndrome were randomized to receive either arthroscopic lateral retinacular release (n=40) or open release of the lateral retinaculum (n=40). The primary outcome of this trial was Lysholm Knee Function (LKSS) scores at 2 & 6 weeks, 6 months, and 1 & 2 years, post-operatively. Other outcomes such as length of stay, operative time, and complication rates were also assessed. Significant differences in LKSS were apparent within groups when comparing pre-operative and post-operative assessments.
