2016 OARSI World Congress on Osteoarthritis: Total knee replacement followed by a non-surgical treatment program reduce localized and spreading pain sensitization - a pre-defined ancillary analysis from a randomized controlled trial

100 patients eligible for total knee replacement (TKR) were randomized to undergo an operative TKR procedure prior to a 12-week non-operative treatment, or the non-operative treatment alone. The purpose of this trial was to determine whether the combination of surgical and non-surgical therapy was associated with a superior reduction of pain experienced for several outcomes when assessed after 3 months. Results demonstrated that although patients receiving combination treatment were observed to have a significant reduction in localized and spreading pain sensitization; all other pain-related outcomes were comparable between study groups.
