An app-based nonpharmacological intervention improves patient-reported disease activity, functionality, and quality of life in patients with axial spondyloarthritis: a randomised controlled trial.

200 patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) were randomized to receive the Axia smartphone application alongside standard care or standard care alone. The coprimary outcomes were changes in disease activity assessed using the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), physical function assessed using the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI), and quality of life assessed using the Ankylosing Spondylitis Quality of Life questionnaire (ASQoL). Secondary outcomes included pain, self-efficacy, health literacy, exercise adherence, and Assessment of Spondyloarthritis International Society 20% and 40% improvement responses (ASAS20 and ASAS40). Outcomes were assessed at baseline and 12 weeks. Overall, the results of the study revealed that Axia significantly improved disease activity, physical function, and quality of life compared with standard care, with greater ASAS20 and ASAS40 response rates. These findings suggested that app-based rehabilitation could provide an effective adjunct to conventional axSpA management.
