Multimodal Nonopioid Pain Protocol Provides Better or Equivalent Pain Control Compared to Opioid Analgesia Following Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Surgery: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial.

40 patients who underwent a primary arthroscopic rotator cuff repair were randomized to receive a non-opioid multimodal pain management protocol (n=17) or a traditional opioid-based pain management protocol (n=23). The primary outcome of interest was Visual Analog Scale (VAS) pain scores in the first 10 postoperative days. Secondary outcomes of interest included the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System-Pain Interference (PROMIS-PI) scores and adverse events. VAS pain scores at 1 and 4 days post-operation were significantly lower in the non-opioid protocol group. Moreover, the number of days with upset stomach and constipation was significantly lower in the non-opioid protocol group. No other differences were observed between groups.
