Nonoperative versus operative treatment for thoracolumbar burst fractures without neurologic deficit: a meta-analysis
Clin Orthop Relat Res. 2012 Feb;470(2):567-77. Epub 2011 Nov 5Exclusive Author Interview
Dr. Harris discusses nonoperative versus operative treatment for thoracolumbar burst fractures without neurologic deficit.
4 independent studies (n=201) were identified that compared operative and non-operative treatment of thoracolumbar burst fractures without neurologic deficit. 79 patients from two RCTs were compiled in a meta-analysis that compared functional and clinical outcomes. The results from this meta-analysis indicate that there were similar VAS pain scores, Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire scores and return to work rates. The operative group demonstrated improves kyphosis, but also reported an increased complication rate.
