The effect of triclosan-coated sutures on the rate of surgical site infection after hip and knee arthroplasty: a double-blind randomized controlled trial of 2546 patients

Bone Joint J. 2018 Mar 1;100-B(3):296-302

2546 patients scheduled for total knee arthroplasty or total hip arthroplasty were randomized to closure with either a triclosan-coated Vicryl suture (Vicryl+ group) or standard Vicryl suture (Vicryl group). Patients were assessed over the first 30 days after surgery for the development of superficial or deep surgical site infection. Incidences of superficial surgical site infection, deep surgical site infection, and surgical site infection overall (superficial plus deep infection) did not significantly differ between the Vicryl+ group and the Vicryl group.
