Prevention of postoperative bleeding in hip fractures treated with prosthetic replacement: efficacy and safety of fibrin sealant and tranexamic acid. A randomised controlled clinical trial (TRANEXFER study)

161 patients with a sub-capital femoral fracture and undergoing arthroplasty were randomized to one of three groups: topical fibrin sealant application, topical tranexamic acid applications, or standard haemostasis through electrocoagulation alone. The primary outcome of this study was volume of blood loss to postoperative drainage. Results demonstrated no significant differences between the three groups in the primary outcome, or in secondary outcomes of total blood loss, hidden blood loss, haemoglobin level, and rate of patients who required transfusion.
