Total hip arthroplasty versus resurfacing arthroplasty in the treatment of patients with arthritis of the hip joint: single centre, parallel group, assessor blinded, randomised controlled trial

BMJ. 2012 Apr 19;344

126 adult patients with severe hip joint arthritis were randomized to receive either total hip arthroplasty or hip resurfacing arthroplasty. Results from 12 month follow-up indicated that there were no significant differences between the two groups in regards to hip function, Harris Hip Score, and Oxford Hip Score. In addition, complication rates did not differ between the two groups, but there was a trend towards greater wound complication rate in the total hip arthroplasty group.
