Will gender-specific total knee arthroplasty be a better choice for women? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Six studies (5 randomized controlled trials and 1 retrospective comparative study) were included in this analysis investigating the efficacy of gender-specific implants in total knee arthroplasty. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was any clinical or radiographic difference between gender-specific and conventional components. Qualitative analyses of knee range of motion and Knee Society Scores indicated limited difference between gender-specific and conventional implants. Pooled results demonstrated no significant differences between groups in radiographic outcome measures, with the exception of component overhang which was reduced in gender-specific prostheses.
