Periarticular Injection of Liposomal Bupivacaine Offers No Benefit Over Standard Bupivacaine in Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Prospective, Randomized, Controlled Trial

162 patients scheduled for total knee arthroplasty were randomized to postoperative analgesia using periarticular injection analgesia containing either liposomal bupivacaine or standard bupivacaine HCl. The purpose of this study was to determine if the use of liposomal bupivacaine was associated with significantly lower perioperative pain scores. Results demonstrated no significant differences between groups in average daily pain, worst daily pain, or least daily pain over the first 24 hours after surgery and over the first 4 days postoperatively. Narcotic consumption also did not significantly differ between groups.
