The effect of gentamicin in irrigating solutions on articular infection prophylaxis during arthroscopic ACL reconstruction
Arch Orthop Trauma Surg. 2014 Feb;134(2):257-61. doi: 10.1007/s00402-013-1910-7. Epub 2013 Dec 10360 patients undergoing arthroscopic ACL reconstruction were randomized to receive saline irrigation fluid with or without the addition of gentamicin. The purpose was to compare these two treatment approaches with respect to rates of septic arthritis. Results indicated that although the rate of septic arthritis was higher in the saline group (2.2%) compared to the gentamicin group (0.57%), this difference was not found to be statistically significant. The overall rate of postoperative septic arthritis in the entire study population was 1.4%.
