The Value of Routine Intravenous Tranexamic Acid in Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Preliminary Study.

Eighty-eight patients scheduled for an elective total hip arthroplasty for the treatment of osteoarthritis or osteonecrosis were randomized to receive a 1g intravenous dose of tranexamic acid or normal saline prior to skin incision for the reduction of blood loss. Primary outcomes of interest included intraoperative blood loss and transfusion rate. Secondary outcomes of interest included time to discharge, functional outcome scores and the incidence of thromboembolic events. Results revealed no significant differences in all outcomes between the two groups.
