Closed Suction Drainage Has No Benefits in Anterior Hip Arthroplasty: A Prospective, Randomized Trial

J Arthroplasty. 2016 Sep;31(9):1954-8

122 patients scheduled for direct anterior total hip arthroplasty were randomized to undergo the procedure with or without the use of a postoperative drain. The purpose of this study was to determine if the use of a postoperative drain was associated with a significantly greater increase in transfusion rate, complication rate, and blood loss when compared to no drain. Results demonstrated a no significant difference in the incidence of transfusion and total blood loss in the drain group compared to no drain group over a follow-up period of 6 weeks.
