Posterior Short-Segment Fixation with or without Fusion for Thoracolumbar Burst Fractures

73 patients with a single-level thoracolumbar burst fractures (Denis type-B) were randomized to short-segment fixation using either pedicle screw fixation with or without spinal fusion. Results, following a minimum of 5 year follow-up, indicated that there were no significant differences in radiological or clinical outcomes between these two groups. The study findings suggested that spinal fusion was unnecessary for the treatment of thoracolumbar burst fractures.
