Early mobilization does not reduce the risk of deep venous thrombosis after Achilles tendon rupture: a randomized controlled trial

Patients undergoing Achilles tendon repair are often kept in an immobilizing implement such as a cast or a boot while rehabilitating. As with many different surgeries and injuries, early mobilization is being seen as preferable and important where possible. In this study, the authors randomized patients to early mobilization versus standard care after Achilles tendon repair. There was no significant difference in the rate of adverse events such as Deep Vein Thrombosis or re-rupture. Patients in the early mobilization group did have significantly higher pain scores at 1 week. Overall, early mobilization appears safe, though it may increase pain levels without any apparent benefit, at least in terms of adverse events.
