Patellar resurfacing in total knee replacement: a ten-year randomised prospective trial

58 patients with degenerative osteoarthritis undergoing total knee replacement (TKR) were included in a study exploring whether or not resurfacing of the patella leads to optimal results. Patients were randomized to undergo TKR with or without a cemented polyethylene patellar component. At 10 years, there was no significant difference between the two groups with regards to pain, functioning and prevalence of patella crepitus. Results from this study were therefore inconclusive in determining the relative effectiveness of patellar resurfacing compared to non-resurfacing.
