Five-year comparison of oxidized zirconium and cobalt-chromium femoral components in total knee arthroplasty: A randomized controlled trial

40 patients with bilateral symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) scheduled for bilateral cruciate-retaining total knee arthroplasty (TKA), received oxidized zirconium femoral component in one knee (OZ), and a cobalt-chromium component in the contralateral knee (CC) (knees were randomly assigned treatment). The outcome measures of this study were measured by subjective scoring, radiographic scoring and the patient satisfaction scores. The results over 5 years indicated that none of the parameters were significantly different between knees at all follow-ups, although 38% of patients preferred CC compared to 18% OZ (p<0.05).
