Biceps tenotomy has earlier pain relief compared to biceps tenodesis: a randomized prospective study
OrthoEvidence Journal (OE Journal) - ACE Report
OE Journal. 2020;8(2):13 Knee Surg Sports Traumatol Arthrosc.2019;27(12):4032-4037.What this means for my practice?
Based on this trial, there were no significant differences between the two groups on pain or functional outcomes. Cuff repair status had no impact on outcomes. Overall, this is a very small trial and it is difficult to draw direct conclusions, but it does not definitively support one intervention over the other.
Study Summary
Biceps tenotomy and tenodesis are two techniques to deal with long head biceps tendon pathology. Tenodesis has the benefit of theoretically superior cosmesis, though pain and squeaking at the docking site are potential complications. On the other hand, tenotomy is a simpler technique, albeit with risk of "Popeye" deformity. The authors randomized 34 patients undergoing shoulder arthroscopy to receive tenotomy or tendoesis and assessed pain and functional outcomes. There were no significant differences between the two groups, regardless of cuff repair, at 3 or 24 months.
