Cold versus cold compression therapy after shoulder arthroscopy: a prospective randomized clinical trial

52 patients were randomized to receive either cold pack or cold compression therapy following shoulder arthroscopy. The purpose of this study was to determine if a cold compression system, containing interchangeable cold packs with bandage and pump system, offered a significant decrease in pain and inflammation when compared to standard cold packs up to 24 hours postoperatively. With the exception of lower pain scores during activity in the cold compression group at 24 hours; no significant between-group differences were observed in pain scores - resting or during activity - or arm circumference at 15 or 20cm above the lateral epicondyle when assessed at 2, 8, or 24 hours after surgery.
