Third-Generation Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation Versus Mosaicplasty for Knee Cartilage Injury: 2-Year Randomized Trial

55 patients with knee cartilage injuries were randomized to either undergo autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) with the use of the Cartipatch scaffold (solid agarose-alginate) or osteochondral transfer through mosaicplasty with an autograft. The purpose of this study was to compare clinical outcomes between ACI with the Cartipatch scaffold as assessed by subjective International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) scores. Findings indicated greater improvement in IKDC scores at 2 years follow-up in favour of mosaicplasty. Additionally, a greater number of adverse events were also reported in the Cartipatch group. It should be noted that the number of patients included in this trial did not meet the predetermined sample size calculation.
