Immediate changes in pressure pain sensitivity after thoracic spinal manipulative therapy in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome: A randomized controlled study

48 patients with unilateral subacromial impingement syndrome were randomized to receive thoracic spinal manipulative therapy or a sham treatment. The purpose of this trial was to determine if thoracic spinal manipulative therapy affects shoulder pain sensitivity. The results indicated that the treatment group did not show additional benefit in terms of pressure pain threshold or patient reported outcomes, such as the numeric pain rating scale, Pennsylvania Shoulder Score, or the global rating of change, 24-48 hours after treatment, as compared to the sham group.
