Short-term Effects of Thoracic Spine Thrust Manipulation, Exercise, and Education in Individuals With Low Back Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial
J Orthop Sports Phys Ther. 2020 Jan;50(1): 24-32.One hundred and one patients diagnosed with low back pain (LBP) who underwent 3 sessions of core stabilization exercise and education were randomized to undergo additional thoracic manipulation (n=52) or sham manipulation (n=49). Outcomes of interest included the following: pain using numeric pain-rating scale (NPRS), disability measured using the modified Oswestry Disability Questionnaire (MODQ), the Fear-Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ) total score and its sub-scores of physical activity (FABQ-PA) and work (FABQ-W), and the global rating of change (GROC). All outcomes were measured after the 3rd session was completed for patients. Results demonstrated no statistically significantly difference between groups for all outcomes (p>0.05 for all).
