Effectiveness of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation for Enhanced Recovery After Total Hip Replacement Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Geriatr Orthop Surg Rehabil. 2022 01-Sep;():. 10.1177/21514593221129528Sixty patients undergoing total hip replacement surgery were randomized to either the neuromuscular electrical stimulation group (NMES; n=30) or the standard of care group (n=30). Outcomes that were assessed included postoperative pain, thigh and calf circumference, length of stay, drainage volume, and patient acceptance. Significantly better pain scores were reported on days 1 and 3 in the NMES group compared to the control. Calf circumference was also significantly lower in the NMES group on days 3 and 5. Patients in the NMES group stayed in the hospital for a shorter period than the control group.
