The effectiveness of supplementing a standard rehabilitation program with superimposed neuromuscular electrical stimulation after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: a prospective, randomized, single-blind study
Am J Sports Med June 2011 vol. 39 no. 6 1238-1247This study sought to examine the efficacy of potential improvements to standard rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction. 131 patients undergoing ACL reconstruction were randomized to one of three groups: standard rehabilitation, or rehabilitation augmented with neuromuscular electrical stimulation (traditional vs. garment-integrated). The neuromuscular electrical stimulation (garment-impregnated), in conjunction with rehabilitation, yielded significantly improved outcomes (strengthening), as compared to traditional simulation or physiotherapy alone.
