Effect of incisional negative pressure therapy and conventional treatment on wound complications after orthopaedic trauma surgery: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled studies.

Nine studies including 3,062 patients undergoing orthopedic trauma surgery were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) vs. conventional wound dressing. Pooled outcomes of interest included the incidence of deep and superficial wound infections, wound dehiscence, inflammation, and exudate. Pooled results showed no significant difference in deep wound infections, wound inflammation, or wound exudation between NPWT and conventional dressings. However, NPWT significantly reduced superficial wound infections and wound dehiscence. These findings suggest that NPWT may effectively reduce certain post-operative complications, but further large-scale trials are required to confirm its efficacy.
