Perioperative Intravenous Nefopam on Pain Management and Ambulation after Open Spine Surgery: A Randomized Double-Blind Controlled Study.

100 patients undergoing lumbar decompression and fusion were randomized to receive either nefopam (n=50) or a saline placebo (n=50). The primary outcome of interest is morphine consumption after 24 hours. Secondary outcomes of interest included total morphine equivalents consumption, PainDetect-Questionnaire (PDQ), length of stay, time to PACU discharge, upright position, ambulation, first urine catheter removal, drain removal, pain at rest and movement on a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), and the incidence of adverse events. All outcomes were similar among the two groups except for length of stay, resting and moving pain scores at PACU which were significantly better in the nefopam group.
