Neer Award 2018: the effect of preoperative education on opioid consumption in patients undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff repair: a prospective, randomized clinical trial
J Shoulder Elbow Surg. 2018 Jun;27(6):962-967140 patients scheduled for arthroscopic rotator cuff repair were randomized to preoperative opioid education or no additional preoperative opioid education. Patients were assessed over the first 3 months after surgery for the number of narcotic pills consumed and for pain scores on a visual analog scale. Results demonstrated significantly reduced cumulative narcotic pills consumed after 6 weeks and 3 months in the preoperative opioid education group, as well as significantly lower pain scores at 2 weeks and 6 weeks.
