Footprint preparation with nanofractures in a supraspinatus repair cuts in half the retear rate at 1-year follow-up. A randomized controlled trial.

In patients undergoing supraspinatus repair, the addition of nanofractures at the footprint reduces MRI proven retear rates. However, no differences in patient reported outcomes were found. Further studies powered to assess clinically important differences are warranted.

Seventy one patients with isolated reparable supraspinatus tears were randomized to receive a repair with footprint preparation utilizing nanofractures (n=36) or standard repair (n=33). The primary outcome of interest was the retear rate at 12 month follow-up on MRI. Secondary outcomes of interest included postoperative pain scores, shoulder specific patient reported outcomes and health related quality of life scores. There were significantly lower retear rates in the nanofracture group than the control group (p=0.038). There was no significant differences in postoperative patient reported outcomes or adverse events.
