Controlling Pain After Total Hip and Knee Arthroplasty Using a Multimodal Protocol With Local Periarticular Injections
J Arthroplasty. 2007 Sep;22(6 Suppl 2):33-8. Epub 2007 Jul 26131 patients (n=71 THA, n=60 TKA) were randomized to either receive treatment according to a multi-modal protocol with periarticular injection or patient-controlled analgesia. The results indicate that multi-modal pain control with periarticular injection is effective in improving post-operative pain and patient satisfaction in patients that have undergone total hip arthroplasty. Both cohorts demonstrated lower narcotics usage and better functional recovery in the multi-modal pain control groups.
