Multimodal perioperative care plus immunonutrition versus traditional care in total hip arthroplasty: a randomized pilot study

36 patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty were randomized to receive either ACERTO perioperative protocol, which consisted of shortened preoperative fasting, carbohydrate-enriched drinks, restricted IV fluids and preoperative immunonutrition, or standard perioperative protocol. The purpose of this study was to determine if administration of ACERTO and immunonutrition was associated with decreased length of hospital stay and serum C-reactive protein levels. Results demonstrated that patients in the ACERTO group had significantly reduced C-reactive protein levels on postoperative day two and were discharged a mean of 3 days earlier when compared to the control group.
