Effectiveness of a multifaceted podiatry intervention to prevent falls in community dwelling older people with disabling foot pain: randomised controlled trial.

BMJ 2011;342:d3411

In order to study the effectiveness of different types of podiatric care in the prevention of falls, 305 community dwelling individuals with disabling foot pain were randomized to receive a multifaceted podiatry intervention or routine podiatry care. Over a follow-up period of 12 months, outcome measures, such as fall rate and the proportion of fallers, were assessed. The results of the study indicate that the multifaceted intervention reduced the rate of falls in individuals with disabling foot pain. The individuals in this treatment group also had significantly improved functional outcomes.
