Mobilisation-with-movement induces analgesia during exercise but exercise alone is not analgesic in people with lateral elbow tendinopathy: An assessor blinded, randomised crossover trial.

Study Summary

24 participants with lateral elbow tendinopathy were randomized in a crossover trial. Each participant received three randomized conditions in a single session: isometric gripping exercise (Exercise), mobilisation-with-movement combined with isometric gripping exercise (MWM + EX), and Control (quiet rest). All 24 participants completed all three conditions. Primary outcomes were pressure pain threshold (PPT) at the elbow and tibia, and temporal summation of pain (TS). Secondary outcomes included resting elbow pain (NRS) and grip force. Outcomes were assessed before, immediately after, and 10 minutes after each condition. Overall, MWM + EX produced significant local and remote hypoalgesia and allowed greater grip force without increasing pain, whereas exercise alone increased resting pain and did not induce hypoalgesia.
