A single dose of tranexamic acid infusion is safe and effective to reduce total blood loss during proximal femoral nailing for intertrochanteric fractures: A prospective randomized study
Ulus Travma Acil Cerrahi Derg . 2022 Nov;28(11):1627-1633.One hundred and ten elderly patients admitted to the emergency department with intertrochanteric femoral fractures were randomized to receive either tranexamic acid (n=55) or saline (n=55) for proximal femoral nailing. Outcomes of interest were hemoglobin levels, hematocrit, total blood volume, blood loss, transfusion rate and units, intraoperative fluid infusion, and the incidence of complications after 2 postoperative days. The tranexamic acid group presented with significantly better hemoglobin and hematocrit levels after two post-operative days, as well as significantly lower hidden blood loss, incidence of transfusion, and transfusion units.
