Evidence for minimally invasive therapies in the management of chronic calcific tendinopathy of the rotator cuff: a systematic review and meta-analysis
J Shoulder Elbow Surg. 2014 Aug;23(8):1240-1249The 20 studies (1544 patients) identified in this meta-analysis explored the short to midterm effectiveness of minimally invasive (conservative) treatments for chronic calcific tendinopathy of the rotator cuff. The purpose of this analysis was to determine pain reduction, functional improvement, and size of calcific deposits in the rotator cuff following various non-surgical interventions. Pooled results revealed high-energy extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) was the most thoroughly investigated intervention, and that it improved function and reduced pain compared to low-energy ESWT, sham treatment, and no treatment.
