Effects of methylene blue on postoperative low-back pain and functional outcomes after lumbar open discectomy: a triple-blind, randomized placebo-controlled trial

OE Journal. 2016;4(11):22 J Neurosurg Spine. 2016 Jan;24(1):7-15115 patients undergoing lumbar open discectomy were randomized to either methylene blue solution or saline solution. The purpose of this study was to determine whether methylene blue is an effective treatment for postoperative pain following lumbar disc operations. The findings of this study indicated that methylene blue solution may be effective in pain relief and functional improvement as measured by the visual analogue scale (VAS) and the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), respectively, over a period of 3 months.
