A prospective randomized radiographic and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometric study of migration and bone remodeling after implantation of two modern short-stemmed femoral prostheses
J Orthop Traumatol. 2015 Sep;16(3):237-43.Fifty patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty, due to severe hip osteoarthritis, were randomized to receive either Metha or Nanos short-stemmed femoral implant. Radiographic and clinical outcomes were evaluated and compared for the two prosthetic designs up to 1 year postoperatively. The results indicated that both prosthesis types showed significant longitudinal migration within the first 3 months postoperatively, but little change from 3 months to 12 months. Additionally, significant decrease in periprosthetic bone mineral density was observed after 3 months for both groups in Gruen Zones 1 and 7, and was maintained in Gruen Zone 1 at 12 months for both groups. There were no cases of aseptic loosening deemed for patients of either group. Clinical outcome measures were reported to be good at 12 months postoperatively.
