Safety and efficacy of mesotherapy in musculoskeletal disorders: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials with meta-analysis

Seven randomized controlled trials including 512 patients with musculoskeletal disorders were included in this meta-analysis comparing mesotherapy treatment (n=236) or control (systemic therapy; He-Ne laser therapy; or oxygen-ozone therapy; n=276). The primary outcome of interest was the pooled incidence of adverse events. The secondary outcome of interest was pooled pain scores on a visual analogue scale (VAS). Pooled pain scores were significantly in favour of the mesotherapy group vs control (p=0.0005). Pooled analysis for the incidence of adverse events was not performed. however, mild and temporary adverse events were reported in the included studies (i.e., nausea, fatigue, numbness, sweating, headache, ecchymosis, bleeding, pain and local reaction at the injection site).
