Impact of Melatonin on Sleep and Pain After Total Knee Arthroplasty Under Regional Anesthesia With Sedation: A Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Pilot Study
J Arthroplasty. 2015 Dec;30(12):2370-550 patients were randomized to receive doses of either melatonin or a placebo after undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) under regional anesthesia. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of melatonin on sleep quality and pain up to 72 hours postoperatively. Results demonstrated impairment in sleep quality postoperatively however; there was no effect of melatonin on sleep quality or daytime sleepiness, pain at rest, or pain with standardized activity.
